    A lepidosauromorph specimen from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Moskvoretskaya Formation of the Moscow Region, Russia

    A fragmentary diapsid left maxilla from the Bathonian Peski locality in Moscow Region, previously referred to Choristodera, is identified as Lepidosauromorpha indet. This specimen represents the first fossil record of basal lepidosauromorphs in the Middle Jurassic of European Russia. Among basal lepidosauromorphs, the maxilla from the Peski locality resembles those of the Middle Triassic Fraxinisaura and the contemporary Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Marmoretta in subpleurodont tooth implantation, a relatively low dorsal process, and high keeled teeth with gently recurved apices and striae on the lingual side. This similarity suggests possible close relationships of Fraxinisaura, Marmoretta and the Peski form. The recognition of a basal lepidosauromorph in the fauna of the Peski locality extends the known geographical range of the Bathonian non-lepidosaurian lepidosauromorphs and demonstrates their wide Laurasian distribution at this time.     Quorum Sensing Controls Adaptive Immunity through the Regulation of Multiple CRISPR-Cas Systems

    Bacteria commonly exist in high cell density populations, making them prone to viral predation and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) through transformation and conjugation. To combat these invaders, bacteria possess an arsenal of defenses, such as CRISPR-Cas adaptive immunity. Many bacterial populations coordinate their behavior as cell density increases, using quorum sensing (QS) signaling. In this study, we demonstrate that QS regulation results in increased expression of the type I-E, I-F, and III-A CRISPR-Cas systems in Serratia\textit{Serratia} cells in high-density populations. Strains unable to communicate via QS were less effective at defending against invaders targeted by any of the three CRISPR-Cas systems. Additionally, the acquisition of immunity by the type I-E and I-F systems was impaired in the absence of QS signaling. We propose that bacteria can use chemical communication to modulate the balance between community-level defense requirements in high cell density populations and host fitness costs of basal CRISPR-Cas activity.This work was supported by a Rutherford Discovery Fellowship (P.C.F.) from the Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ) and the Marsden Fund, RSNZ.     WHO guidelines on fluid resuscitation in children: missing the FEAST data.

    The World Health Organization recommendations on management of common childhood illnesses affect the lives of millions of children admitted to hospital worldwide. Its latest guidelines,1 released in May 2013, continue to recommend rapid fluid resuscitation for septic shock, even though the only large controlled trial of this treatment (Fluid Expansion as a Supportive Treatment (FEAST) found that it increased the risk of death in African children.2 A subsequent systematic review of bolus resuscitation in children with shock resulting from severe infection also did not support its use.3 Failure to take this evidence into account is not consistent with WHO’s commitment to systematically and transparently assess evidence using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) process when producing guidelines and could endanger the lives of children

    Imaging Subtle Microstructural Variations in Ceramics with Precision Ultrasonic Velocity and Attenuation Measurements

    There is an international research effort to incorporate ceramic components into hot sections of heat engines. A major portion of this effort is directed towards the understanding and control of ceramic processing so that the strength of ceramics may be optimized. To date, the strength of sintered ceramics (e.g., SiC) is well below, by about two orders of magnitude, the theoretical strength [1,4]. This discrepancy is understood to be due to the presence of voids, inclusions, agglomerates, and anomalously large grains [4]. These defects, causing premature failure, are introduced or formed during the ceramic manufacturing process. Considerable work has already been done to remove these strength reducing material variations. This has resulted in a steady increase in the fracture strength of ceramics; however, the rate of this increase has slowed. Adding to the problem is the fact that the fracture strength of identically produced experimental samples varies as much as 35 percent [2]. As a result of the loss of momentum toward higher strengths, researchers are turning to ceramic- ceramic fiber composites. These composites show promise of increasing the fracture strength of ceramic materials even further. It is likely that the same material strength variations will be present, at least locally in the matrix, in ceramic composites

    Effect of water vapor on the spallation of thermal barrier coating systems during laboratory cyclic oxidation testing.

    The effect of water and water vapor on the lifetime of Ni-based superalloy samples coated with a typical thermal barrier coating system—b-(Ni,Pt)Al bond coat and yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) top coat deposited by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) was studied. Samples were thermally cycled to 1,150 C and subjected to a water-drop test in order to elucidate the effect of water vapor on thermal barrier coating (TBC) spallation. It was shown that the addition of water promotes spallation of TBC samples after a given number of cycles at 1,150 C. This threshold was found to be equal to 170 cycles for the present system. Systems based on b-NiAl bond coat or on Pt-rich c/c0 bond coat were also sensitive to the water-drop test. Moreover, it was shown that water vapor in ambient air after minutes or hours at room temperature, promotes also TBC spallation once the critical number of cycles has been reached. This desktop spalling (DTS) can be prevented by locking up the cycled samples in a dry atmosphere box. These results for TBC systems confirm and document Smialek’s theory about DTS and moisture induced delayed spalling (MIDS) being the same phenomenon. Finally, the mechanisms implying hydrogen embrittlement or surface tension modifications are discussed

    I present a brief review of some of the most recent and active topics of star formation process in the Milky Way using mid and far infrared observations, and motivated by the research being carried out by our science group using data gathered by the Spitzer and Herschel space telescopes. These topics include bringing together the scaling relationships found in extragalactic systems with that of the local nearby molecular clouds, the synthetic modeling of the Milky Way and estimates of its star formation rate.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures.
